Elon University has extended suspensions of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity and the Epsilon Theta Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity through the Spring 2018 semester, Rex Waters, dean of Student Development, confirmed to Elon News Network.
Waters said the fraternities failed to abide by the terms of their thee-year suspensions originally levied in the 2014-15 academic year.
According to an email sent by Waters to former Sigma Pi members, there was “strong evidence” that Sigma Pi held fraternity sponsored events, such as recruiting new members and holding social events.
Pending a review from Elon Fraternity and Sorority Life and Elon Interfraternity Council (IFC), Sigma Pi can return to campus in 2018 if it completes a detailed plan for recruitment and new member activities, among other things. Reunions and alumni activities are not affected.
In both instances, the fraternities were suspended for hazing. Sigma Pi allegedly forced new members to “plank on bottle caps.”
