An email was sent out earlier this morning that instructed all Elon University faculty members to reset their Elon passwords immediately. Christopher Waters, assistant vice president for Technology and the Chief Information Officer of the University, notified staff members that their Elon email would be automatically disabled if passwords were not changed by 1 p.m. EST.
According to the email, about 1,500 University accounts had been compromised because of a security breach with OneLogin, a password manager that handles authentication between Elon users and the Syncplicity backup service. While account usernames and passwords were accessed, there is no indication that files stored in Syncplicity were inappropriately retrieved.
The email was sent out in an effort to protect account holders and to prevent any further usernames and passwords from being accessed.
