I sat tuned in. Waiting. Waiting for a big deal to be made actually during the draft.
The NBA draft is complete, and there's no more waiting to see who will be drafted where. But, the biggest moves could have possibly been made before David Stern even took the podium.
The blockbuster move to send Shaq to Cleveland made noise the day before the draft. Also, a package deal to send high-flying Vince Carter to Orlando the day of the draft were both the biggest noise makers of the draft.
The draft itself, was well, a little disappointing. No major trades happened during the draft and teams sometimes seemed to make irresponsbile picks.
First of all, there's no way that Stephen Curry should have gone as high as the seventh overall pick. Yes, on some draft boards, he was predicted to be selected even higher. But the guard from Davidson, has a lot to prove.
Watching Curry in the SoCon the past few years, a lot can be said about his game. There's no doubt that he's a scorer. For the past three years, he's been putting up big numbers not in the ACC, the Big East or even Conference USA, but, in the mediocre-at-best Southern Conference.
Curry needs a few more years to put on some weight and get bigger and stronger. He needed to prove that he can play against better competition. When Davidson played stronger non-conference opponets, Curry struggled.
Believe me, Curry's game is flashy and exciting and it won't be the same watching him not in a Davidson uniform. He just needs a few years to develop and was too high of a pick at No. 7.
There were a few other surprises throughout the draft, including how far Wayne Ellington fell and how high Tyler Hansbrough was selected.
Hansbrough went No. 13 overall to the Indiana Pacers. Great nitty gritty player in college, but his game doesn't translate to the NBA style of play. He's a hard-nosed guy that will work hard, but won't become a star in a league, but more of a role player.
Ellington on the other hand draft's status dropped quicker than expected. He was selected No. 28 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Quite frankly, the Timberwolves got a steal.
Ellington is athletic and this past season at UNC he emerged as a big-time scorer. Ellington has the athleticism to play the NBA style of basketball and his transition to the pros will be made with ease.
The rest of the NBA offseason should be exciting with trade rumors surrounding Amare Stoudemire. It's a waiting game, as with all of the players who were drafted.
Let's wait and see how they develop.
