Both the Elon Phoenix and The Citadel Bulldogs possess a strong presence in their wide receiver positions, with seniors Terrell Hudgins and Andre Roberts, respectively.
On the season, Hudgins has 750 yards and six touchdowns. With 59 catches, he leads the Phoenix in receiving. This season, Hudgins caught his 318th pass to break the Division-I career receptions record, passing Florida A&M's Jacquay Nunnally. Hudgins has recorded 334 career receptions. Hudgins is also getting closer to Jerry Rice's Football Championship Subdivision career receiving yards record. Rice recorded 4,693 receiving yards during his time at Mississippi Valley State. Hudgins needs just 300 yards to break this record.
Roberts has 317 yards so far this season and is responsible for 24 of The Citadel's points. He has 31 catches, with an average of 10.2 yards per reception. Roberts has recorded five games in which he has logged 100 first-half receiving yards. He has 239 catches, second all-time in the Southern Conference and 3,268 receiving yards, third all-time in the SoCon, in his career.
Both players are on the watch list for the Walter Payton Award, the only two wide receivers in the SoCon to be recognized on the list. The two appear on the 20-person list along with Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards and Samford running back Chris Evans. The Walter Payton award is given each year to the most outstanding offensive player in the Division-I FCS.
