Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey indicate that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck in Virginia, with rumblings felt as far as the Carolinas, New York and Rhode Island. Some Elon University students reported they felt the quake, while others expressed disbelief when they heard about it and had felt nothing.

Numerous students have tweeted that they experienced troubles with cell service immediately following the quake. No damages around campus have been reported so far, according to Sherri Wall, work order clerk at physical plant.

Campus Police received calls asking if they had felt the earthquake or could verify if one took place, said Scott Jean, Chief of Security.

In an interview with CNN, seismologist Lucy Jones said the quake was one of the largest experienced in the D.C. area.

"People should be expecting aftershocks, especially over the next hour or two," she said.

Shortly following the earthquake, the city of Burlington released an earthquake preparedness guide, which can be accessed here.

Buildings along the east coast were evacuated, including the Pentagon and control at JFK and Newark Airports.

Stay with The Pendulum for information as it develops and for reports of any damages on campus.
