A tight defensive battle, highlighted by a long touchdown run, leaves The Citadel with a 7-6 lead over Elon after the first half.
The Citadel sophomore running back Darien Robinson ran 67 yards for a score with 1:42 left in the second quarter, escaping a few tacklers and outrunning Phoenix defenders. Robinson leads all players with 96 yards on seven carries.
Elon junior kicker Adam Shreiner was 2-3 on field goals in the first half, nailing kicks of 25 and 19 yards through the uprights. He missed a 42-yarder late in the first quarter.
The Phoenix were led on offense by junior quarterback Thomas Wilson, who was 17-26 with 172 yards and one interception. Junior wideout Jeremy Peterson caught seven passes for 65 yards.
The Citadel sophomore quarterback Ben Dupree was 0-3 through the air but ran for 58 yards on ten carries.
After an offensively slow first quarter, Elon ended the first half with 244 yards of offense, while The Citadel gained 159 yards, all on the ground.
Bulldogs' junior defensive back Davis Boyle and Elon sophomore safety Chandler Wrightenberry each had an interception in the second half.
