So this week, almost all of the new members in Elon’s sororities are getting “bigs,” but even though I’m not in a sorority, I feel like I’ve gotten two bigs this past month.
Just two weeks ago, I started the Elon University crime beat and, much like sorority sisters who’ve been through it all before, two Pendulum staffers have helped me out with my new undertaking. Last semester's crime beat reporter (and this semester's news co-editor) Grace Elkus has helped me out with scheduling when I should go to the campus security office and has given me general tips to lead me in the right direction, much like a big would, and Anna Johnson, the 2011 editor-in-chief of The Pendulum, sent me one of the friendliest emails I’ve ever gotten, saying that I have “the best beat ever!” and that “it’s hard to give up a beat you lived for two years.” I could understand that, especially when something big like the retirement of Chuck Gantos, director of campus safety and police, is happening (which I am so thrilled to be doing a story on this week).
I’m so excited to be doing this beat, and with the guidance of my “bigs,” I feel like it will make things a whole lot easier (and more fun!). I promise I won’t get into sappy mode, but I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the help and guidance of my many wonderful Pendulum bigs. You may not get me boxes of stuff or decorate my room, but you don’t have to. You give me valuable knowledge, guidance and friendship, just like a big, and what more could a girl ask for?!
