After an exciting Oscar season, a whole new slate of films is coming to the big screen. While some releases won’t be out for a while – I’m looking at you, “Hunger Games” — there are plenty of great films playing across the country.
Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax
From the creators of “Despicable Me” comes the 3-D animated feature “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” based on the book. In the film, Ted, voiced by Zac Efron, seeks out a real tree in his artificial world to win the love of Audrey, voiced by Taylor Swift. He then learns the tale of the Lorax, a furry creature voiced by Danny DeVito, who “speaks for the trees” against the all-consuming Once-ler. The film colorfully depicts the clash between industrial pursuits and the balance of nature. To say any more would spoil the ending - even if you’ve already read the book - but there’s a reason TheWrap.com lists “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” as one of its most anticipated films of 2012.
John Carter
Coming March 9 for the first time is Disney’s 3-D live-action film “John Carter.” Directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton, this adventure flick is an adaptation of the book series “John Carter of Mars.” Taylor Kitsch of “Friday Night Lights” plays John Carter, a soldier from the Civil War who is transported to another planet and must save it from destruction. If the early trailers for the film are any indication, “John Carter” is a true epic. Huge casts, cutting-edge effects and grandiose fights are sure to keep you in awe for the entire two-hour saga.
If these films aren’t enough to satisfy your appetite, don’t throw away your popcorn just yet. “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” and “The Vow” are still in theaters, and “The Hunger Games” and “Titanic 3D” are just a few weeks away. Don’t forget to buy your ticket before these shows sell out!
