According to The Times-News' Adam Smith, Elon junior wide reciever Aaron Mellette will not play in Saturday's annual Spring Game.
Smith tweeted, "Stud receiver Aaron Mellette to get star treatment, sit out Elon's spring game Saturday. No injuries or issues. Phoenix playing it safe."
He also tweeted a quote from Elon head coach Jason Swepson that read: "Our goal is to get Aaron to Sept. 1 and let him loose." The Phoenix will open the 2012 season Sept. 1 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Mellette had 113 catches for 1639 yards and 12 touchdowns last season in Swepson's first year as the head coach of the Phoenix. He finished fifth in voting for the 2011 Walter Payton Award, which is given annually to the best player in the Football Championship Subdivison of NCAA football.
The Spring Game is at 1 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium. Admission is free and there will be various activities for those in attendance.
