The Southern Conference released its 2012-13 Men's and Women's Basketball Preseason Media and Coaches Poll today, Oct. 25, as well as the coaches' Preseason All-Conference Teams.
On the men's side, Elon University was selected to finish second in the North Division by the coaches and third in the division by the media. The Phoenix earned three first-place votes in each poll.
Junior guard Jack Isenbarger was selected to the Preseason All-Conference Team by the coaches, joining the likes of last year's Players of the Year, Davidson College senior forward Jake Cohen (media) and junior forward De'Mon Brooks (coaches) and Georgia Southern University junior forward Eric Ferguson.
Brooks was named the coaches' Preseason Player of the Year. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was picked to win the North Division and Davidson to win the South Division by both the media and coaches.
On the women's side, the Phoenix tied for fifth in the preseason coaches poll with Furman University and finished alone at fifth in the media poll. Senior forward Kelsey Evans and senior guard Ali Ford were selected to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Appalachian State University was picked to win the conference by the media and had three representatives on the All-Conference Team. The coaches predicted Davidson senior forward Sophia Aleksandravicius would repeat as Player of the Year and the Wildcats would win the conference.
The Elon men's basketball team will play an exhibition game against Ferrum University Nov. 3 in Elon before opening its season Nov. 10 against Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. The women's team will host Belmont Abbey College in an exhibition game Nov. 4 and open its season Nov. 9 against host University of South Carolina.
