The Alamance County District Attorney charged Alexis Morgan Gray this week with felony possession of a firearm on a college campus, according to an email this morning from Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President and Dean of Student Life.
Jackson's email stated that Gray returned yesterday to the Alamance County Jail after completing her psychiatric evaluation in Raleigh at the Central Regional Hospital.
Smith Jackson's email said that Gray was "released to the custody of her parents after posting the required bond and being outfitted with an electronic monitoring device."
The district court ordered Gray to stay in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, with the exception of Mercer County, New Jersey, Jackson said. Gray is from Holland, PA and is a student from Penn State University.
Jackson also said that Gray and her parents left North Carolina this morning to return to Pennsylvania, where she will be enrolled in "an intensive psychological treatment program."
Gray "may not have direct or indirect contact with anyone associated with Elon University," according to the email.
The email also stated that Gray can only return to North Carolina for court appearances, and even then, she must stay outside of the Town of Elon and Elon University.
Gray came to Elon's campus on November 25th with weapons in her vehicle. According to the university campus police incident report, Gray's car contained a Remington-597 .22 caliber rifle, a knife and 6.5 feet of rope.
Jackson said he "will continue to be in communication with the Alamance County District Attorney's Office to stay abreast on the whereabouts and status of Ms. Gray and we will remain vigilant in our efforts to keep our community safe."
Here is the full Dr. Smith Jackson email from 9:48 a.m. on December 5:
Dear students, faculty and staff,
I'm writing to update you on the status of Alexis Morgan Gray, 18, of Holland, Pennsylvania, a Penn State University student who came onto the Elon campus on November 25 with weapons in her vehicle. She was charged this week by the Alamance County District Attorney with felony possession of a firearm on a college campus.
Ms. Gray was evaluated yesterday at the Central Regional Hospital in Raleigh and then returned to the Alamance County Jail. She has been released to the custody of her parents after posting the required bond and being outfitted with an electronic monitoring device. Ms. Gray and her parents left North Carolina in route to Pennsylvania this morning.
Ms. Gray was ordered by the District Court to remain in the states of Pennsylvania or New Jersey (she may not enter Mercer County New Jersey). She is only allowed to return to North Carolina for court appearances, and is to remain outside the boundaries of the Town of Elon and the Elon University campus at all times. She may not have direct or indirect contact with anyone associated with Elon University. She is to be enrolled in an intensive psychological treatment program in Pennsylvania.
We will continue to be in communication with the Alamance County District Attorney's Office to stay abreast on the whereabouts and status of Ms. Gray and will remain vigilant in our efforts to keep our community safe.
On behalf of the university, I wish to express appreciation to Alamance County District Attorney Pat Nadolski and District Court Judge Tom Lambeth for their expedient and thorough handling of this case to ensure that Ms. Gray will not pose a threat to our community. I also want to recognize the Elon student and Ms. Gray's parents who alerted Campus Police that Ms. Gray was upset and headed to Elon on November 25. I also want to thank Elon Campus Police who took quick action to intercept Ms. Gray and take her into custody as soon as she entered university property. Finally, I want to recognized the Town of Elon Police for their support in this case.
As always, we remind members of our campus community to call 911 for any security concerns or suspicious situations. And again, we ask that you reach out to someone in authority if you or someone you know is involved in a dangerous personal situation. This is an essential step in keeping our community safe.
Sincerely,
Smith Jackson
Vice President and Dean of Students
