The Elon University women’s basketball team won its third consecutive game Wednesday night by defeating the Wofford Terriers 67-57.
Senior forward Kelsey Evans once again led the way with 12 points and grabbing seven boards, leading balanced scoring for the Phoenix. Aside from Evans, sophomore forward Sam Coffer had 11 points, and senior guard Ali Ford and junior guard Kelsey Harris chipped in with 10 apiece. Harris also matched Evans' team-high seven boards.
Neither team shot particularly well, as both sides shot under 40 percent from the field. The difference was Elon picking up 21 points from the free-throw line.
Senior guard Morgan Wrightson had a game-high 23 points for Wofford and was the only player in double figures for the Terriers.
The defense was once again strong for the Phoenix caused 21 turnovers and held Wofford to a porous 34 percent from the field.
After being up as many as 11 in the first half, the Phoenix were able to withstand a strong push from the Terriers, which saw them get their first lead of the game just under five minutes into the second half. Elon sophomore guard Zora Stevenson then made a three-pointer to put Elon back in front. Despite Wofford’s best efforts, the Phoenix never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game.
With the win, Elon are back at the .500 mark overall at 7-7 and an impressive 4-1 in conference play. The loss drops Wofford to 5-7 and winless in the SoCon at 0-4.
The Phoenix’s next game will come against fellow North Carolina and Southern Conference rival University of North Carolina at Greensboro on January 14. Game time is 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
