After dropping both games of the Season NIT Tip-Off North pod Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 18-19, the Elon University men’s team will complete the tournament at home against Metro State University and Georgia State University Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 25-26, respectively.
Both games are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
In the first two games of the tournament in Piscataway, N.J. on the campus of Rutgers University, Elon fell to future Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel University 71-64, then was beat in the consolation game against Canisius College, 86-85. Elon’s record is now 2-3 after starting the season 2-0.
Metro State participated in the West region of the tournament in Tucson, Ariz., and lost to the University of Rhode Island, another future CAA rival for the Phoenix, in the first round of the pod, then beat Farleigh Dickinson in the consolation game. These are exhibition games for the Roadrunners, as Metro State is a Div. II team. Games against Div. I opponents are considered exhibition games for all Div. II schools. However, Metro State is the No. 1 team at the Div. II level, so they're going to bring a tough game from Denver to Alumni Gym.
Georgia State participated in the South pod hosted by the University of Alabama. After dismantling McNeese State University in the opening game of the pod by a score of 96-70, the Panthers fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide 75-58.
Last time Elon took on Georgia State was during the 2007-2008 season. The Phoenix won the game at home 71-49. The year before, Elon lost on the road to the Panthers 63-53. Both games came in which Ernie Nestor was the head coach of the Phoenix.
After finishing the NIT Season Tip-Off, Elon will stay home for two more games against Columbia University Dec. 1 and Virginia Military Institute Dec. 3 before taking a 10-day break. Following the break, Elon travels to Boulder, Colo. to face Colorado University Dec. 13.
