The Elon University softball team won its sixth consecutive game Wednesday, March 4 against North Carolina State University at Hunt Park.
Freshman Kiandra Mitchum started in the circle for the second straight game for the Phoenix. She went four innings giving up two earned runs on four hits, while also adding three strikeouts. Junior Kayla Caruso relieved Mitchum for the remainder of the game, keeping NC State at bay. Caruso also had three strikeouts in her three innings pitched. In both the sixth and seventh innings, Caruso set the Wolfpack down in order. She also received the save, her first for the season.
The contest was a close matchup, both teams fighting for the lead. NC State broke the seal in the top of the second inning giving them the 1-0 edge. In the bottom of the inning, freshman Madison Kadlic singled to right center, scoring senior Sarah Little.
Without allowing a run in the top of the third, Elon took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, a single by junior Emily Cameron scored two runs on an error by the NC State defense. The Phoenix took the lead 3-1. In the top of the fourth, NC State drove across one run cutting the lead to only one, but Elon would not allow another across the plate. The Phoenix won 3-2.
Elon will travel to Greensboro, NC Thursday, March 5 when it takes on North Carolina A&T University.
