The Elon University volleyball team picked up its first win in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference play this season with a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 25-16) win at the College of William and Mary. The win snaps a 12-game losing streak in conference play dating back to Oct. 31 of last year.
The Phoenix started strong in the first set. With the score 18-18, junior middle blocker Ally Karle tallied a kill to put Elon on top. The Phoenix held the lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-23. The Tribe answered in the second set, starting on a 6-1 run, and Elon was unable to respond. The Tribe won set two, 25-20.
Sets three and four belonged to the Phoenix. A kill by freshman outside hitter Kam Terry sealed a 25-20 third set win for Elon. The fourth set saw Elon take a seven point lead on a rare kill from freshman defensive specialist Maddie Jaudon. The Phoenix rolled past the Tribe, 25-16, to secure the victory.
Karle lead the Phoenix offense against the Tribe, tallying 13 kills and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Busa was also a key component, finishing with 12 kills and five digs. Junior outside hitter Kayla Agae led the team with 12 digs, and sophomore setter Sydel Curry had 46 assists in the match.
The victory boosts Elon to 4-17 overall with a 1-7 record in CAA play. William and Mary falls to 8-13 overall with a 2-6 CAA record. Elon's next match is 7 p.m. Oct. 20, when the Phoenix hosts North Carolina A&T State University.
