The Elon University softball team finished a perfect weekend with a 1-0 win in 10 innings over Central Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon.
Freshman pitcher Elise Walton threw a complete game shutout, using 122 pitches in 10 innings and scattering five hits while striking out eight.
“It was good, my arm felt fine," Walton said. "I wasn’t really feeling that tired, I feel like it was just the momentum and energy of my teammates making plays behind me that really kept me going."
Elon’s offensive kept quiet until the bottom of the tenth inning, when junior catcher Emily Roper led off with a double. Senior designated player Emily Cameron moved over senior pinch runner Kayla Caruso on a fielder’s choice bunt. Cameron stole second and Elon had runners on second and third for sophomore Kristin Hoover, who hit a bloop single into center field to score the winning run for Elon.
“I feel like we know we can compete with anybody in our conference," Walton said. "It’s more of a drive and will to win and we kind of have been lacking that. I feel like this weekend was great to have heading into conference."
Elon’s next game is at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 when it hosts the University of North Carolina at. They begin Colonial Athletic Association play with a home series against Drexel University beginning March 26.
