The Elon University men’s tennis team cruised past Hofsta University 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship April 22 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Phoenix won each of its singles matches, winning in straight sets at the top four singles positions to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Petar Tomic clinched the victory for the Phoenix without dropping a single point 6-0, 6-0. The Auburn University transfer made easy work of senior Leonardo Pires at No. 5 singles.
Freshman Mario Paccini was the first to record his singles victory, with a win at No. 2 singles. The Madrid native won every game in the first set en route to his 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Senior Robert Lindgren then showed his superiority over freshman Yahn Gawrit in his 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
CAA Rookie of the Year Felipe Sarrasague knocked off freshman Marcus Smith at No. 1 singles to bring Elon to within a point of victory, before Tomic sealed Elon’s fourth straight victory.
Salvador Miares and Felipe Ossess-Konig’s matches went unfinished at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively.
Elon improves to 17-5 with the victory, marking the third time in the last four years the Phoenix has won at least 17 matches. The loss drops Hofstra to 11-7.
Tomorrow’s semi-final action returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center after rain forced teams indoors. The Phoenix will host the No. 2 seed College of Charleston at 10 a.m.
Charleston defeated Elon once already this season in a narrow 4-3 road victory April 6.
