The Elon University softball team continued its undefeated start to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with two more wins against the College of Charleston Saturday, winning 5-1 in Game 1 and 4-3 in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
In the first game, Elon’s offense had eight hits spread out between six batters, led by freshman second baseman Erica Serafini going 2-2 with three runs, three RBIs, and her first career home-run. Her homer went over the left field fence to bring in three runs and break a 1-1 tie.
“I was going up there looking for my favorite pitch and got it,” said Serafini. “I hit it and it felt great to help my team out and get more runs, and it felt great to get my first college home-run.”
Freshman starting pitcher Elise Walton pitched a one-hitter, throwing 99 pitches in her seven inning complete game giving up one hit and three walks while striking out two.
“I am really proud of our pitching staff. They get what we are trying to do and they need each other, cause it is such a long season,” said head coach Kathy Bocock. “They are working hard to make the pitches to get ground balls so we can play defense behind them.”
Elon had a 4-0 lead after four innings in the second game, but Charleston had five hits and two walks to convert into three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman pitcher Abby Barker came in to close the game in the sixth inning with the bases-loaded and finished the game for Elon. Sophomore outfielder Kara Shutt led the Phoenix offensively, going 3-3 with a run.
“Our core value today was Unity so we were just trying to play as a team today, which showed through the batting order,” Shutt said.
Elon takes on College of Charleston for the finale game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
