Derek Winton, a 22-year-old fifth-year senior, died early Saturday morning at Alamance Regional Medical Center, according to a release from the Town of Elon Police Department.
At about 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Elon University Police were called to Winton's Phoenix Villas apartment on West Lebanon Avenue in reference to a cardiac arrest. Winton was unresponsive, according to an email from Smith Jackson, dean of Student Life, and CPR was performed.
He was taken to the hospital, where we was pronounced dead.
Town of Elon Police are investigating Winton's death, but there aren't signs of foul play. According to the incident report, drug and/or alcohol use was involved.
The State Medical Examiner examined Winton's body Monday, but no preliminary information was available, according to Cliff Parker, Town of Elon Police Chief. The toxicology report should be released in the coming weeks.
Winton, of Lexington, Massachusetts, was majoring in sport and event management. He's a former Teaching Fellow, member of the Premier Sport and Event Society, vice president of Sigma Pi Fraternity and tutored young children for the It Takes a Village Project.
There will be a Gathering of Friends at 7 p.m. Sunday in Numen Lumen Pavilion. Truitt Center Chaplains are available 1-4 p.m. Saturday in Numen Lumen Pavilion.
