Curt Cignetti is already off to an impressive start as Elon University's head coach.
For the first time since 2011, Elon's football team won its third straight game, defeating No. 6 ranked Richmond University 36-33.
This is the second straight week Elon defeated a ranked opponent. They beat Charleston Southern University 19-17 at Rhodes Stadium last week.
Junior running back Malcolm Summers carried the team, rushing for a career-high 294 yards. Summers broke his previous high that he set last week against Charleston Southern when he ran for 174 yards.
Freshman quarterback Davis Cheek was efficient through the air with 134 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Tre Marsh caught two touchdowns en route to the victory.
Elon moves to 3-1 (1-0) and is most likely bound for a top-25 ranking after defeating two ranked opponents. The Phoenix will play the University of Albany next week at home.
