Flooding in Virginia Residence Hall moved some students out of their dorm rooms earlier this week.

K.J. Jacoby is a first year student who lives in Virginia. Jacoby said the flooding began Sunday night when brown water started to accumulate inside her and her suite mate’s shower.

On Monday night, the water seeped onto their bathroom and bedroom floor. Jacoby says her suite mates used towels to try to clear the room of water.

“I didn’t realize how bad it was,” Jacoby said. “I came into the bathroom and saw my other two suite mates with rain boots on, and we’re all putting our towels on the floor because it’s flooding all over the entire half of this room.”

Jacoby spent the night in her RA’s room and her roommate in the common room.

“I did not take it very well. Everyone else was kind of like laughing, but I was like ‘Oh my god! You’re kidding me. We have class tomorrow. This is like the first night before classes this is insane.’"

Residence Life told Jacoby and her suite mates that cement in the pipes caused the backup. Virginia Hall was renovated for this school year, and construction finished one day before move-in day.

In an email statement to Elon News Network responding to the incident, Director of Residence Life Marquita Barker said “the issues are rectified now.”

“We try very hard to avoid these issues,” Barker said. “But, the Physical Plant team had these issues fixed very quickly, so the students were not inconvenienced for an extended period of time.”

Jacoby and her suite mates moved back into their room Tuesday night.
