Updated at 6:57 p.m. the severe thunderstorm warning has been extended until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 27 central North Carolina counties including Alamance County. The NWS also issued a hazardous weather outlook for the same area. Both are in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday night. The NWS also issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 6:14 p.m. for Alamance and three other surrounding counties until 8 p.m.
The NWS indicated in a bulletin that a severe thunderstorm was observed near Greensboro at 6:14 p.m. It said the storm was moving east at 45 miles per hour and could contain gusts of wind up to 60 miles per hour. Greensboro is located approximately 19 miles from Elon.
Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley issued an email on Thursday afternoon reminding students to be aware of services offered by the university to keep students up to date. Dooley also offered a list of emergency shelter locations in campus buildings.
