Town of Elon Police responded to a shooting on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 206 Pinedale Drive, about one mile from The Station at Mill Point, where they found two injured individuals.
Police have identified Barry 'BJ' Campbell, 23, as a suspect in this case and have issued a warrant for his arrest, but no arrest has been made yet.
One man and one woman were injured in the shooting. The female was identified by Town of Elon Police as Maureen Chafatelli, 22, and the male victim was identified as Nickolas Johnson, 22.
According to the official police report, upon arrival Chafatelli was responsive and taken to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Johnson was unconscious at the scene and died from his gunshot wounds en route to Cone Health Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Campbell was a former resident of 206 Pinedale Drive and was previously in a relationship with Chafatelli. According to Town of Elon Police, Chafatelli ended her relationship with Campbell Tuesday, Feb. 4, the night prior to the shooting. On the morning of the shooting, Campbell left the home, returned later and shot his ex-girlfriend and Johnson, a friend of hers who was visiting.
Town of Elon police believe this to be an isolated and targeted incident. Police are urging anyone with information to contact them at 336-584-1301. Anyone who calls with information may be eligible for a cash reward.
Neither Chafatelli nor Johnson are Elon Students. Jon Dooley, vice president for student life, also confirmed over email that "no students were involved in the incident."
As of now the police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are continuing to investigate the incident.
