Updated Jan. 28, at 2:00 p.m. to include information about IFC recruitment.
Elon University’s Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council are planning for a delayed recruitment. Panhellenic's recruitment process will be spread across two weeks at the end of February and into the beginning of March.
In an email addressed to Panhellenic leaders, orientation, round 1 and round 2 will start on Feb. 26 and end on Feb. 28. The third and final round and bid day will cover March 6 and 7. Registration for spring recruitment will begin on Jan. 30 and last through Feb. 14.
Potential new members will have the opportunity to virtually meet with their Pi Chi groups, which are randomly assigned with a designated recruitment counselor who temporarily de-affiliates with their Panhellenic organization, during the week of Feb. 21.
IFC will have orientation on Monday, March 8 with days 1 and 2 on March 9 and 10, respectively. Brotherhood days will occur on March 11 and 12 with bid day on March 14. Registration for IFC recruitment will occur between Feb. 8 and 22.
Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Delta, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha are the nine sororities that will participate in Panhellenic's formal recruitment this spring.
Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Pi and Zeta Beta Tau are the eight fraternities that will participate in IFC's formal recruitment this spring.
This schedule comes after the university decided to postpone recruitment for Greek organizations due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Panhellenic recruitment typically occurs over Fake Break the period in between the end of Winter Term and the start of the spring semester. IFC spring recruitment usually occurs within the first few weeks of the spring semester.
Jordan King, the associate director of student involvement, said the decision to postpone recruitment was related to the seven fraternities and sorority COVID-19 clusters in the fall semester.
“The pause on all planning activities for the spring 2021 Panhellenic and IFC recruitment processes will allow student leaders to work with university officials, chapter advisors and national leaders to develop and submit a comprehensive plan outlining strategies to ensure all chapter activities will be conducted in a manner that is healthy and meets COVID-19 guidelines,” King wrote in an email to Elon News Network in the fall.
The university previously announced, before recruitment was postponed, that it would be held virtually. IFC already recruited virtually during their fall rush.
“Nothing will threaten our plans for spring recruitment and the new member period more than incidents or outbreaks within the fraternity and sorority community,” Dean of Student Development Jodean Schimederer, wrote in an email to panhellenic leaders Wednesday. IFC leaders received the same email Thursday.
Schimederer did not immediately respond to Elon News Network’s request for comment.
