Elon University will require all students to submit documentation of the COVID-19 vaccination for the fall semester. The university joins a growing number of schools across the country, including Duke University, to require the vaccine.

The requirement applies to all students enrolled in classes, living on campus, participating in study abroad or participating in on-campus activities. The deadline to submit documentation of the vaccine is July 30 for undergraduate students.

Students are able to apply for an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination for medical or religious reasons, according to an email from Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. To apply for exemption, students must submit both the required documentation and sign the “assumption of risk” form by July 9. The testing and mask requirements for those who are unvaccinated will be determined in the fall.

Owen Covington, assistant vice president for news and information, said faculty and staff are encouraged to get the vaccine, but not required.
