The Colonial Athletic Association will host a press conference Jan. 25 to discuss “membership matters,” according to an advisory issued by the conference. Conference Commissioner Joe D’Antonio will speak at 10:30 a.m.
In November, James Madison University received final approval to leave the CAA and join the Sun Belt Conference. With the loss of James Madison, the CAA’s membership would drop to nine schools in basketball and 11 in football beginning in the 2022-23 academic year if it does not add any new members.
However, according to reports, Hampton University and Monmouth University are expected to join the league beginning in July. Reports have also suggested Stony Brook University, which is a football-only member of the league, could become a full fledged member. Hampton is currently a member of the Big South Conference, while Monmouth is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Stony Brook is a member of the America East Conference for all sports other than football.
The league has not made any statement about these reports and there is no timetable for an official announcement to be made regarding potential expansion.
Follow along for updates from the press conference.
