The Elon University baseball team won its final game of a three game series against the Toledo University Rockets 3-1. The Phoenix lost Friday's game 13-6 but won 13-2 on Saturday.
The Phoenix started off strong in the first inning, immediately scoring two runs, which carried them until the seventh inning, where they scored their last l of the game.
Graduate student third baseman Samuel Frontino and freshman left fielder Charlie Granatell accounted for the two consecutive runs in the first, while sophomore right fielder Alex Iadisernia scored off a fly ball to left center field from sophomore center fielder Justin Casella in the seventh.
Senior pitcher Brian Edgington shut out Toledo for seven innings and got out of four innings with Toledo players in scoring position. Edgington has a 1.83 ERA (earned run average) on the season and had six strikeouts on the day.
“I just tried to keep making pitches one at a time and not thinking ahead,” Edgington said.
According to head coach Mike Kennedy, the team as a whole took its game strategy inning by inning and kept the same mindset – stay consistent.
Kennedy praised Edgington’s play on the mound for the first seven innings, complementing his poise on the mound.
“It was a great day to pitch and throw strikes,” Kennedy said. “I just let him do his thing.”
Kennedy also noted Friday’s loss and how the team came back from that through talking off the field.
“We came back yesterday after losing Friday and took care of winning the weekend. It came down to which team was going to show up today,” Kennedy said. “We worked on character type stuff pre-game and got ourselves ready today.”
Elon returns to Latham Park on Tuesday, March 8 to host the University of Notre Dame at 4 p.m.
