The Elon University softball team struck early with a four-run second inning to defeat the Hofstra University Pride 8-2. After losing both games in yesterday's double header, the Phoenix finished the weekend strong with consistent play at the plate and in the field.
Head coach Kathy Bocock said moving on from yesterday's losses was key to today's success.
“We absolutely had to put yesterday behind us,” Bocock said. “My focus with the team was we had to come out and play today without holding onto yesterday. They did a great job with that.”
As well as responding to Bocock's mental preparation, the Phoenix executed successfully on the physical side of the game. Aggressive baserunning by freshman left fielder Chloe Hatzopoulos and sophomore third baseman Gabi Schaal helped give the Phoenix momentum in the second inning.
“Testing the infielders, pitcher and catcher rattles things up,” Hatzopoulos said. “We’re all fast, and we use it to our advantage.”
The Phoenix registered 10 hits on the day. A two-run home run to left-center field by Hatzopoulos pushed the Phoenix to a 7-2 lead going into the fifth inning.
“Being aggressive at the plate and stringing hits together is key,” Hatzopoulos said. “Playing loose and being ourselves helps with confidence, and it shows for us at the plate.”
Senior Megan Grant made several strong defensive plays at second base and placed down a key bunt in the second inning for an RBI. Grant added another RBI single in the third. Schaal had three hits on the day and two RBI’s, also scoring one of her own.
A diving catch by junior shortstop Bella Devesa sealed the win for the Phoenix.
Elon will face off against the University of Delaware next weekend in a three-game series, with two games at noon and 2:30 p.m. on April 2 and one at 1 p.m on April 3.
“This is conference play now,” Bocock said. “Every game matters. Every single game.”
