Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright died at age 84 after battling complications with cancer, her family announced yesterday. Albright was the featured speaker for Spring Convocation for Honors at Elon in 2009. 

There, she discussed the role of education in a changing world, the importance of international learning and connecting the work between two generations. Spring Convocation for Honors recognizes Dean’s List and President’s List students, the faculty, graduate students, the upcoming graduating class and members of the Elon Society.

Before her convocation address, Albright spoke at an Elon news conference where she discussed a wide range of foreign policy issues. She praised the work of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She also discussed the 2008 global recession and nuclear arms development in Iran. 

Albright, serving during the Clinton Administration, was the first woman to hold the office of Secretary of State and did so from 1997 to 2001. During her term, she focused on national security and foreign policy. Before working as Secretary of State, Albright served as U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997.
