BOSTON - Three runs in the eighth inning from the Northeastern University Huskies were too much for the Elon University baseball team to overcome, as the Phoenix lost 7-3 in the opening game of a three-game weekend series on April 8.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead after the first inning but redshirt junior designated hitter Luke Stephenson hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to put Elon ahead 3-1. Stephenson has a team-high six home runs this season.
However, Northeastern responded quickly in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to take a 4-3 lead. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Spencer Bauer made his first start of the season for Elon but allowed three straight base runners in the third inning. Redshirt sophomore Joe Savino entered in relief but could not get the Phoenix out of trouble, as all three base runners scored during the frame.
Elon added just two hits the rest of the game and finished with only five total. Northeastern scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away and secure the victory.
Elon is now 2-5 in Colonial Athletic Association games. The two teams will play again today at 1 p.m.
