HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Elon University lacrosse team lost its fifth straight game in its regular season finale, falling to the Hofstra University Pride 18-12.
The Phoenix began the game on a 2-0 run behind two quick goals by freshman midfielder Sammy Fisher and senior attacker Gillian Curran. However, the Pride followed up with a 10-4 run to close the first half, including four by junior midfielder Taylor Mennella.
Elon kept up with Hofstra in the second half but ultimately fell short, as the Pride outscored the Phoenix 8-6 in the final two quarters to secure the win.
The Phoenix finished the regular season with a conference record of 1-5. After winning its first conference matchup against William & Mary, Elon lost its last five against conference opponents.
Despite being close in draw controls, the Phoenix were outmatched by the Pride. Hofstra led in shots with 45 compared to Elon’s 25. The Phoenix also suffered from 13 turnovers, with the Pride only having five throughout the contest. Four Elon players had multiple goals, and eight players scored in total.
With the loss, Elon’s season is over, as the Phoenix failed to qualify for May’s Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.
