NEWARK, Del. — The Elon University softball team lost the third game of its series against the University of Delaware Blue Hens 7-2 on Sunday, falling to 1-5 in Colonial Athletic Association games.
The Phoenix, picked to finish third in the CAA, had just three hits in a game that was delayed an hour due to lightning. Elon opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning as senior designated hitter Raelyn McGarry scored off a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Carley Davis. The Phoenix led 1-0 until the fifth inning.
Delaware scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth. Elon also committed two errors in the inning. The Phoenix used two relief pitchers to get through the inning, with freshman Isley Duggins throwing only 15 pitches and giving up three runs before redshirt senior McKenzie Weber got the final out of the inning. Weber remained in for the rest of the game.
In the sixth inning, senior center fielder Rebecca Murray scored as Davis reached on an error and recorded her second run batted in. Davis was tagged out later as the third out of the penultimate inning.
Delaware added one more run in the bottom of the sixth and did not allow an Elon base runner in the final inning.
Elon faces North Carolina A&T on Wednesday before hosting College of Charleston for a three game series this weekend.
