Former Elon University head men’s basketball coach Mike Schrage has been hired as a special assistant to the head coach at Duke University.
Schrage resigned as Elon’s head coach on Tuesday after three seasons with the team. He compiled a 33-52 record at Elon and went 10-22 last season.
Schrage previously served as the director of basketball operations at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski from 2002-08. With Krzyzewski retiring after last season, Schrage will now work with first year Duke head coach Jon Scheyer in an elevated assistant coaching role.
“I loved being a head coach and especially at Elon, but this was an opportunity I felt like I could not pass up,” Schrage said in a press release. “I am honored to be back at Duke starting this new chapter with Jon Scheyer.”
Duke reached the Final Four last season and finished with a 32-7 record. According to 24/7 Sports, Duke has the top ranked recruiting class for the 2022-23 season with four five-star commits.
Elon will begin a national search for its next head coach immediately, according to Director of Athletics Dave Blank. The next coach will be the third in the last five seasons for Elon.
