Mediterranean Deli, in downtown Elon, posted a sign on its door announcing the permanent closure of this location after four years.
The deli and bakery served salads, spreads, baked goods and sandwiches. There is another location located in Chapel Hill, which the sign said will remain open.
"We appreciate the years of support that you have given us, and everyone is welcome at our Chapel Hill location," the sign said.
A Mediterranean Deli employee said the Elon location is typically closed during summers. The reason for closure is unknown at this time. After speaking with the Chapel Hill location, Elon News Network was told more information will be available Monday.
Mediterranean Deli, located on the ground floor of Park Place was invited by Elon University to join campus in 2017. Park Place declined to comment on the closure at this time.
University spokesman Owen Covington said Park Place was developed in partnership with Elon University and under the partnership, the university leases the land to the building owner but does not own the building.
"Elon contracts with the building owner to provide management and maintenance services for the residential units on the upper floors, which are used by Elon students and managed by Elon’s Office of Residence Life," Covington said.
According to Covington, the university does not have a direct relationship with Mediterranean Deli regarding its operation of the retail restaurant or its lease of the space, but the deli did provide catering services to university clients at times.
Elon News Network visited the location and nobody was on site.
