Oct. 3 kicks off Elon University's fourth annual Sustainability Week. A variety of different events will be held throughout the week to promote sustainable habits on campus and inspire positive change, according to the Office of Sustainability. It is also an opportunity for students and members of the community to learn more about Elon’s sustainability efforts.
Sustainability according to the Office of Sustainability’s website is “the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
The office holds events that promote sustainable habits on campus all year long. Assistant Director of Sustainability for Education and Outreach Kelly Harer said having an entire week dedicated to sustainability leaves a bigger impact on the campus community.
“The Office of Sustainability aims to help educate people about the climate crisis and what we can do to make a difference,'' Harer said.
There will be prizes for those who attend the most events throughout the week. Harer said the office wanted to draw people in without being wasteful with the prizes.
There will be a set of first, second and third student winners, along with a set of faculty and staff winners. The first place winner will receive $25 Phoenix Cash, a hammock and a sustainably sourced t-shirt. Second place will receive a hammock and t-shirt. Third place will receive a t-shirt.
