Former Elon University defensive back Cole Coleman has been signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL draft this past weekend. Coleman, who graduated from Elon in December 2022, signed a contract with the team hours after the culmination of the 2023 NFL draft with a $7,500 signing bonus according to Joel A. Erickson, Colts insider, on Twitter. He is one of 14 other athletes to sign an undrafted free agent contract with Indianapolis at this time. All undrafted free agent signings are unofficial until the player both signs the deal and passes their physical.
Coleman ran a 4.37 second 40-yard dash at North Carolina State's indoor practice facility during NFL Pro Day March 28, a time that led all safeties who tried out at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Coleman played in seven games for the Phoenix in the 2022 season due to injuries and finished with 35 total tackles as well as two fumble recoveries. In his five seasons with Elon, Coleman secured 156 solo tackles — tying him for fifth in Elon history with Brandon Wiggins — three total interceptions and four forced fumbles. In 2021, he was named to the first team all Colonial Athletic Association.
Coleman’s signing with the Colts makes him just the 18th player from Elon’s football team to be signed to an NFL deal. His dad, Chris Coleman, spent two seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans.
Elon News Network has requested an interview with Coleman as well as head coach Tony Trisciani and is waiting for comment.
