The launch date for the permanent plaza in downtown Elon has been set for 6 p.m. Dec. 2, according to Elon’s Downtown Development Director Jill Weston.
The construction of the new gathering space began Aug 3., and after three months of construction, it is expected to debut at the town of Elon’s Hometown Christmas event.
The plaza will include dining tables, umbrellas and a stage area for events and musical performances, according to the town of Elon’s website.
Senior Maddie Battinelli said she is excited about the addition of a new gathering space in downtown Elon.
“I'm really excited about it. I think that it would be really nice because the farmers market can take place there and it's a central location and another good outdoor spot,” senior Maddie Battinelli said.
Senior Julia Benjamin also said she is excited to have a central place for the community.
“I think it's a great location because a lot of people are here downtown, so it’s a great spot,” Benjamin said.
Senior Samantha Steiner believes that the construction of the plaza has made crossing the street more difficult.
“My only issue with it was that it makes crossing so difficult because I feel like I'm gonna get hit by a car,” Steiner said.
Despite her qualms with how the construction of the plaza has affected crossing the street, Steiner said she is excited for the opening of the plaza.
“It's been a little bit of a hindrance with pedestrian walking and traffic,” Steiner said. “But I’m excited to hear that it's almost done.”
