Elon University Head Cross Country Coach and Associate Head Track and Field Coach Kevin Jermyn resigned from his position to accept the role of head cross country coach at Duke University.
Jermyn was an instrumental piece in the recent rise of Elon’s cross country and track and field programs. Since arriving at Elon in 2017, Jermyn has helped the two programs break almost every distance school record in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
Under Jermyn’s leadership, the women’s cross country team won their first-ever conference championship in 2019 and went on to win the last five CAA championships. He also assisted the women’s track and field program to three straight outdoor titles from 2021 to 2023, as well as a CAA indoor championship in 2023.
Jermyn was also named the CAA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year five times during his time at Elon. He coached three athletes who were named CAA Rookie of the Year, including sophomore Hattie Reynolds in 2023. He has also coached four CAA Women's Runner of the Year recipients, including Maria Ahm ‘23 who became the first member of the women's cross country program to race at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in 2021. Jermyn also helped Coralea Geraniotis ‘19 become Elon’s first female athlete to earn a league cross country championship at the Division I level in 2018.
Prior to his time at Elon, Jermyn spent 14 years as Duke’s head women’s cross country coach and associate track and field coach from 2000 to 2014.
Jermyn said that he is excited for the new opportunity in Duke Athletics’ press release.
“I regard Duke as the premiere university for elite student-athletes to pursue academics and athletics at the highest levels globally,” Jermyn said. “I am excited to leverage my past experiences and skills to teach Duke runners how to compete for ACC and NCAA Championships, while also excelling academically."
Elon Athletics declined Elon News Network’s request for further comment and stated their press release will be the only comment on Jermyn’s resignation until a new coach is hired.
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mark Elliston is leading the national search for Jermyn’s successor.
