Updated as of 10:01 a.m. on June 25 to include comment from Elon Medical Director of Student Health Dr. Ginette Archinal.
Cone Health, Elon University’s medical service partner, signed an agreement June 21 to become part of Risant Health — a nonprofit organization created by Kaiser Foundation Hospitals.
Cone Health itself is a nonprofit health care network that manages and coordinates care for roughly 200,000 patients in Alamance, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham and part of Forsyth counties, according to a Cone Health press release.
Elon’s Dr. Ginette Archinal, medical director of student health, wrote in a statement to Elon News Network that she did not have any more information than what was announced in the press release at this time.
"I can tell you that nothing will change until there is state and federal approval which can take months," Archinal wrote.
The release also said Cone Health will maintain its brand, name and mission, along with maintaining its own board, CEO and leadership team.
“Cone Health customers will see the same doctors, the same nurses and the same staff in the same locations they do today. We do not anticipate changes in the types of care we provide as a result of becoming part of Risant Health,” Dr. Mary Jo Cagle, CEO and President of Cone Health, said in the release.
Cone Health will be the second health system to become part of Risant Health — with Geisinger paving the way earlier this year.
Greg Adams, chair of the Risant Health board of directors and chair and CEO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, said in the statement that Risant aims to increase access to value-based care and coverage.
“Risant Health refuses to accept that fragmented, episodic, fee-for-service care should define the future of healthcare,” Adams said. “Risant Health has put a stake in the ground that care focused on evidence, equity, population health and improved outcomes must be the future of healthcare. Models like that of Kaiser Permanente, Cone Health and Geisinger will help make that possible.”
Elon University Health Services did not respond to Elon News Network’s immediate request for comment.
