Updated as of 2:39 p.m. to include video of the effects of the weather across campus.
Owner Jason Thomas said the Fat Frogg Bar and Grill is closed early due to flooding. Thomas has owned the bar for seven years and has seen flooding like this three times.
There is no structural damage and Thomas said this is more of an inconvenience than anything. Thomas said the bar will reopen tomorrow.
“Thursdays during the summer are kind of slow anyway, so it's not like a big money loss or anything,” Thomas said.
At 6:28 a.m. Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley announced in an email that Elon University will be closed due to incoming weather from Tropical Storm Debby and potential flash flooding.
“A total of 3-6 inches of rain is predicted by the time the storms begin to move out of our area by Friday morning,” Dooley wrote. “The heavy rain will produce flash flooding and dangerous road conditions are expected in our area throughout the day – if you are driving and encounter flooded roads, turn around.”
At 10:18 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning that is in effect until 4 p.m.
At 7:27 a.m. Dooley sent out a list of university offices that are open for the day, in spite of the weather.
This includes Campus Safety and Police, Belk Library, Campus Recreation and Wellness, Dining Services, Moseley Center, Student Health Services, Faculty/Staff Health & Wellness Clinic and Undergraduate Admissions.
Despite Undergraduate Admissions remaining open, campus tours have been canceled. Mail Services are also closed for the day.
In addition to university offices being closed, the town of Elon announced the closure of administrative offices for the day — as well as the closure of Beth Schmidt Park, Lawrence Slade Park and the cancellation of the Farmer’s Market for the day.
