Move-in day, Aug. 23, will begin with students arriving at the Schar Center and then moving into their neighborhoods. The new East Neighborhood Commons is opening and housing 90 students for the first time this semester and is the biggest new feature for move-in this year, said Owen Covington, university spokesperson.

Apart from the new residential building, Covington said move-in should function similarly to how it has in years past, and is an exciting process. Events throughout the weekend will continue for incoming students.

“Move-In Day is typically a smooth process because of collaboration, teamwork and years of experience,” Covington wrote in an email to Elon News Network. “This approach, adopted during the pandemic, has proved to be successful and we expect everything to go smoothly this year as well.”

Staff across campus will be involved with move-in day this weekend, and Covington said students should feel free to ask for help as they begin to settle in.

“It’s always exciting to meet these new students from across the country and introduce them to Elon as they begin what promises to be a meaningful and transformational journey,” Covington wrote. “I love hearing their stories about how they discovered Elon and what they are looking forward to in the months and years ahead.”

University President Connie Book told Elon News Network this week her biggest advice to incoming freshmen is that they remain curious in their studies and to lean on the support they receive from staff.

“I do tell students to make sure that they bring with them a sense of curiosity, that they're open to learning,” Book said. “We say you're supported. Some things are really challenging, and — of course — we're going to fail at some things if we're pushing ourselves, but you'll be supported through that, and that's nice to know. It helps you take a little bit of risk, knowing that if you fall, that somebody's going to be there with you.”
