Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationally from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. El Centro — Elon University’s educational and cultural hub for engagement, collaboration, advocacy and more within the Latinx / Hispanic community — hosts a month-long celebration for the community to explore and engage with Latinx and Hispanic cultures.

This time period marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile commemorate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18.


Jarabe Mexicano

Wednesday, Sept. 18 | McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts | 7:30 p.m

This band honors the musical taste and cultural influences of its members with genres such as Mexican folk, rock and roll Latin rock, popular Cumbia and more. Admission is free for those with an Elon ID or $15 for those without. Tickets are available at https://am.ticketmaster.com/elontickets/.

Making the Invisible Visible: German/Jewish Migration

Tuesday, Oct. 1 | LaRose Student Commons 200 | 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

This lecture will analyze emigration from Nazi Germany to Latin America, and how people adapted to life in different countries while also raising questions about the long-term consequences of forced migration.

A panel of Latinx and Hispanic students, faculty and staff will speak about the complexity and intersectionality of these identities.
