The town of Elon held a town council meeting on Sept. 10 to address community events and ongoing initiatives. Key highlights include:
Annexation Investigation
A resolution was approved to investigate an annexation petition, which is a petition to add an unincorporated piece of land to the town. This step is crucial for obtaining any approval on upcoming construction projects.
Downtown Elon Partnership
A five-year agreement, renewable thereafter, outlining staffing support and possible funding and structure for downtown development was approved by downtown Elon, Inc. and the town of Elon.
Community Events and Updates

Block Party and University Relations
Mayor Emily Sharpe said the Social District Block Party was an important community builder.
"The block party ultimately is a community event, and the way that I see the community is everyone,” Sharpe told Elon News Network. “It's not just people who live in Elon all the time. It's people from other communities who come to Elon to eat or play or whatever it is, it's also the students and the faculty and the staff. That's what I see as the community."
Sharpe also said she was pleased with the show of support from the university community last weekend.
Ongoing Initiatives
- A skateboard committee is making progress on its objectives to start building.
- The police department is hiring for an administrative position.
