The Town of Elon held a town council meeting Oct. 28 to commend first responders who went to western North Carolina to help with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts. The council also discussed town public transport and funding for downtown Elon’s future development.
Proclamation for Service Above and Beyond
The first responders of the Town of Elon were commended on their service in western North Carolina this past month and were present during tonight’s meeting.
LINK Transit ridership
The September 2024 report on Transit ridership was reviewed covering items such as number of stops, where riders are being picked up and transit time. Further information will be provided in the future to shift LINK Transit’s route and stops for efficiency purposes.
Council member Randy Orwig expressed his support of the public transportation service.
“I just want to be perfectly clear,” Orwig said. “I'm in 100% support of LINK, no matter what we do to talk about it, I just want to help improve it.”
Acceptance of NC Department of Commerce grant award
Mayor Emily Sharpe approved a $250,000 grant for downtown revitalization. This grant will go toward sidewalks specifically and will be used to revitalize downtown from the Elon Community Church to MaGerks Pub. The redesign will include extended sidewalks allowing for outdoor dining and better lighting.
The timeline is dependent on further funding.

- This Thursday Oct. 31 is the last farmer’s market of the year.
- On Nov. 8, there will be a honor guard to change over the flags in front of Town Hall.
- There are a record-breaking number of voters at South Campus Gym for voting.
- Sharpe attended an Elon student town hall to discuss town and university integration as well as local government.
- Sharpe also judged the Greek Dance held Oct. 24.
