Elon University’s Student Government Association appointed its vice president of communications and finance at its business meeting Thursday, April 10.
Juniors Kennedy Steiner and Ian Brecker were selected by executive Student Body president Anya Bratic to be vice president of communications and finance, respectively. Unlike the senate, executive president and vice president, these roles are not elected by the student body and instead go through an application and interview process. After the president selects a candidate, the senate must vote on their approval.
Before Brecker was sworn in, Bratic spoke about his character and dedication to the senate during his time as a member of SGA’s student outreach committee his sophomore year. The senate voted to unanimously approve his nomination.
“It means a lot, having the trust and ability with the senate to really be in charge of student activity funds finances and really distributing the money appropriately,” Brecker said. “I feel very educated for this position. I’m ready to help out, I guess, the student body as a whole.”
Brecker emphasized how important it is for him to be accessible to the student body. He said he wants to make the finance board a transparent and welcoming place for students.
Bratic praised Steiner for her help with gathering data for the senator spotlight series, which former vice president of communications Ella Kucera spearheaded on the SGA Instagram account. Bratic highlighted the experience and ideas Steiner has brought to the table.
“To me, this role means a lot,” Steiner said. “I got to work under the previous vice president of communications, and I got to see a lot of what she did. I’m really excited to be in this role. I’m really excited to help get information out to the student body.”
Steiner said she wants to continue the senator spotlights to ensure the student body knows and recognizes who is in SGA.
“We have the Instagram so that students can see it,” Steiner said. “Just knowing as a whole, we’re a resource for the student body.”

Both Brecker and Steiner worked closely with their predecessors during this previous term. Brecker said he shadowed former vice president of finance Clare Rudolph and has regularly attended the recent finance board meetings. He said he hopes to “carry on her torch.”
The business meeting began with the swearing in of Bratic and executive vice president Sammy Azua. New members of the senate were also sworn in.
The speaker of the senate was also appointed during this meeting. Junior Selma Maric was nominated by her peers and was appointed by a unanimous vote from the entire senate. During this past term, Maric served as a class of 2026 senator. Before the vote took place, Maric spoke to the senate and said she wanted to be the person who can embody the senate and cultivate the culture.
After SGA election results came out in March, many spots were still left unopened. During this meeting, those spots were approved and filled by appointees.
The open School of Communications seat will be filled by Morgan Minoff ‘26, who previously ran for executive vice president against Azua. Marshall Sears ‘27 will fill the open College of Arts and Sciences senate seat. Andrew Blumn ‘27 will fill the open School of Business seat. Grace Britt will be one of the class of ‘26 senators. Tanner Vislay will be one of the class of ‘27 senators. Marielle Costa-Helmsteadt ‘27 will serve as the sustainability senator and Nic Fillippa will serve as senior class president. Fillippa previously campaigned against Bratic for executive student body president.
