Elon University Student Government Association’s joint committee votes to raise executive board stipend to $8,000 each term

For the next term the pay will break down to $15 an hour, working 10 hours a week over a 53 week Senate term. The term was also extended by a week to allow the executive board to be paid for the transition week when the new board is sworn in. SGA’s joint committee, made up of their finance board and judicial committee, voted unanimously with nine students present to make this change.

Elon community reflects over Russia’s war on Ukraine

English professor Jennifer Eidum changed her entire class agenda on Thursday, Feb. 24 — a historic day for the world. Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea, resulting in the biggest attack by one European country against another since World War II. Eidum’s language and dialect class would go from discussing language to discussing the war.

Authors give their opinions about war in Ukraine during panel discussion

Samuel Greene and Graeme Robertson, co-authors of “Putin v. The People: The Perilous Politics of a Divided Russia,” said the rest of the world’s opinions surrounding the Russian invasion of Ukraine will reach the Russian people, despite Putin closely controlling the state’s media. The pair spoke to Elon University students on Monday, Feb. 28, just a few days following the Russian invasion into Ukraine.

Elon University community prepares for mask mandate changes

While this new change may be in the favor of some at the university, not everyone is for the change. Psychology professor Katie King said she is against Elon University lifting the indoor mask requirement and would like the masks to stay, even though Alamance and Guilford counties have lifted the mask mandate.

Elon University softball loses 11-3 against Michigan

Elon returns to Hunt Softball Park on Mar. 2 for a game against North Carolina State University. This will be Elon’s third game against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this season, as the Phoenix defeated UNC-Chapel Hill on Feb. 16 and fell to Duke University on Feb. 23.

Town of Elon Police releases statement regarding Halloween festivities at Oak Hill Apartments

Ahead of Homecoming and Halloween festivities, town of Elon Police released a statement to the residents of Oak Hill Apartments stating they have been made aware of a planned, large-scale party rumored to take place within the apartment complex Nov. 2. The memorandum, released Oct. 28, also stated that if such a gathering occurs, those who are responsible may be subject to legal action including criminal charges and fines. Assistant Elon Police Chief Kedrick King said the decision to release the memorandum was based on previous incidents that have taken place at Oak Hill.

Alamance, Guilford juvenile detention rates reach highest in more than a decade

Steven Isaiah Bradshaw was 11 years old the first time he went to Guilford Detention Center. He was detained again at 13, 16 and 18 years old for various robbery and gun charges. Matthew Cappello, Alamance County’s lead juvenile court counselor, said recidivism — or the likelihood of criminal offenders reoffending — is one of the state’s biggest concerns within the juvenile and criminal justice systems. In 2023, recidivism reached 80% for prisoners with juvenile records in the United States. To combat this, Cappello said North Carolina has made it a priority to invest in diversion and restoration resources rather than punishment and deterrence techniques such as detainment.
