Some Alamance County, North Carolina residents face food insecurity

March 2021 marks the one year anniversary of the pandemic, yet as it continues with food insecurity rates on the rise, many food banks and pantries are weary of the strain the past year has put on food resources and volunteers and staff. Food insecurity — the lack of access, at times, to sufficient amounts of food for a healthy life for all household members — has been an issue in North Carolina prior to the pandemic.

Elon students vie for SGA executive vice president

Three candidates vie for the executive vice presidential spot in Elon University's Student Government Association, with juniors Chloe Yoon and Ireland Horan and sophomore Trevor Molin running for the position. The executive vice president serves as the speaker of the senate and only votes on legislation in the case of a tie. They can also call any special meetings of the senate, and appoint senators to senate committees, as well as committee chairs.

Elon juniors face off in SGA executive president election

Elon juniors Jack Corby and Daniel Dorociak began their campaigns earlier this week in the first fully virtual race for the top spot in the Student Government Association — executive president. Corby currently serves as the class of 2022 secretary while Dorociak serves as the class of 2022 vice president.

Ricky Hurtado and Amy Galey join panel hosted by Elon University

NC State Senator Amy Galey (R-24) and State Representative Ricky Hurtado (D-63) joined a panel hosted by Elon University discussing their new roles in the General Assembly. The panel is a part of the Active Citizen Series. Galey represents a portion of Alamance County in the state senate and Hurtado represents a portion of the county in the state house.

Giving clothes a new life is how Elon University senior Lindsey Patterson describes her small business Faded Front Door. Patterson takes thrifted clothes and upcycles them through bleach dying, embroidery, cropping and much more. Patterson is just one of over 40 Elon University student and alumni entrepreneurs who have a small business with the Marketplace Under the Oaks network — an initiative created in partnership with multiple university offices and centers.

Chemistry professor highlights importance of diversity in STEM

Nyote Calixte knew by the age of 10 she wanted to become a doctor. It was the obvious choice — growing up, the Elon University professor was fascinated by all things science, and the subject came to her naturally. As a first-generation college student and Black woman pursuing a career in STEM, Calixte recognized she would be paving her own path to success.

Elon falls to Drexel in CAA championship game, ending their season

Elon’s men’s basketball season is over. Drexel University beat the Phoenix 63-56 in the Colonial Athletic Association championship, securing the Dragons a spot in the NCAA March Madness tournament. This was the Phoenix’s first time ever advancing to the CAA championship game and the first time a no. 8 seed has advanced to the final.

What to know ahead of Elon men’s basketball CAA championship game

Elon men’s basketball faces off against Drexel tonight in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game. If the Phoenix win, they’ll head to the NCAA March Madness tournament for the first time in program history. The winning team will also be crowned CAA champions, which would be another first for Elon’s program. If they lose, their season will be over.

Studying abroad amid COVID-19 pandemic

Elon University junior Heeba Chergui was studying abroad in Jordan last spring when she and many other students across the globe were sent home at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Determined to get her full experience abroad, Chergui is currently in Jordan for the second time. However, study abroad programs were not guaranteed for Elon students during the 2020-21 academic year.

Elon advances to first-ever CAA final with win over Hofstra

The Elon men’s basketball team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament final Monday night for the first time in school history after beating 4th-seed Hofstra University in a 76-58 semifinal win. Next up for the Phoenix is a finals clash with the winner of the Drexel/Northeastern game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
