OPINION: Future educators have a disproportionate burden to bear

Editor's Note: The content of this editorial includes discussion of gun violence in schools. The national climate has rendered mass shootings an inescapable reality. These situations illustrate the horror of gun violence that educators face today. Teachers are shouldering some of the biggest problems in the country — from the COVID-19 pandemic creating an educational rift to gun violence increasing in classrooms.

Elon University Indigenous students strive for land acknowledgements

According to Paula Patch, NASA’s adviser and professor of English, the organization has about 13 people on its roster, but only four to five members are active. Patch said she feels the organization is an important space to have on campus, even with low attendance. NASA mainly functions as an internal group to talk about problems people have noticed and then to advocate for the change they want to see. Part of this is to increase land acknowledgements on campus events.

Olivia Archer inks her name in the Elon University women’s tennis record books

In her record breaking day, Olivia Archer set foot on court No. 6 of the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to start her match against her opponent. Archer had been keeping a close eye on the all-time career singles wins record set by Frida Jansaker ’14 almost a decade ago. Jansaker was a part of the Elon University women’s tennis team from 2011-14 after joining the team from Sweden.

Elon University’s Department of Music hosts spring orchestra concert

A mainstay on campus since 1916, the Elon University Orchestra held its 106th annual spring concert April 18. The performance, which occurred in front of a packed crowd at the McCrary Theatre, was organized and conducted by musical director Thomas Erdmann. This was Erdmann’s last show, as he is retiring after 34 years in Elon’s Department of Music.

Elon University commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day with Reading of the Names

Over 27 volunteers will stand at the front steps of Moseley Student Center from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to read the names of those who perished during the Holocaust.Organized by Hillel, Jewish Life, Jewish Studies and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, Elon carried its two decade tradition of honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day. Each year, the volunteers only read just a fraction of the names, honoring the lives lost. Interim Assistant Director of Jewish Life Christy Brooks said this has been an Elon tradition for almost two decades, but it has always been a Jewish tradition.

Strong final day push propels Elon University women’s golf to third-place finish at CAA championship

After holing out on the 18th green at The Reserve Club at St. James to complete her final round of the Colonial Athletic Association women’s golf championship, senior Svarin Yuenyong began to walk behind the green to greet her teammates. The round was the final of Yuenyong’s Elon career. As she approached her teammates, she was surprised as they presented her with a bouquet of flowers to commemorate the completion of her four years with the Phoenix. As tears began to well in her eyes, she shared a hug with all of teammates and friends.

Elon University softball steals series win from University of North Carolina, Wilmington

The Elon University softball team entered Hunt Softball Park to face the University of North Carolina, Wilmington Seahawks in the rubber match of the three-game weekend series. After splitting the doubleheader yesterday, the Phoenix came in hungry and ready to play, defeating the Seahawks 7-5 in comeback fashion. Head coach Kathy Bocock said she knew this was an important weekend for the team.

Elon Muses hosts first concert

Upon walking into Yeager Recital Hall, not a single person sat still in their seats. The crowd filled with friends and family of the performers as Elon Muses hosted its spring concert April15. The performance included a series of songs from Hamilton, Hercules, Taylor Swift, Adele and more. Each song was accompanied with choreography, a cappella, acting and featured soloists.
