2022-23 academic year marks 30 years of common reading at Elon University

For the 30th year in a row, Elon University will continue its common reading program and has selected, “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World—and Why Things Are Better Than You Think” by Hans Rosling for the 2022-23 academic year. A committee composed of faculty, staff and students chose the book as one that represents the core values of the university for freshmen students.

Benevolence Farm expands to Burlington

The end of June marks the first month of operation for Benevolence Farm’s secondary location in Burlington. Benevolence Farm, a non-profit social organization, works alongside formerly incarcerated women who are able to live and work at the farm upon their release.

Elon University campus police scheduled for on-site assessment

The Elon University Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment, Chief of Police Joe LeMire announced in an email June 28. The assessment, administered by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, is part of a program to achieve accreditation, which according to the email, requires verification that it meets professional standards in addition to compliance with standards in four areas: administration, policy and procedures, operations and support services.

Concerned town of Elon residents speak on Parc Northwest development

The town of Elon held a public hearing for citizens to speak for or against the rezoning request for the eventual creation of Parc Northwest, a mixed use development that would be located on Shallowford Church Road and University Drive. This was one of two public hearings held during Elon’s Town Council June 27 work session meeting.

Congress passes gun safety bill

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill to address gun violence today. All House Democrats and 14 Republicans voted for the legislation, and the final vote was 234-193. This marks the first major gun safety legislation since the 1994 assault weapons ban. The bill now heads to President Joe Biden for his signature. He is expected to sign.

Supreme Court strikes down New York gun control law

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a century-old New York gun law today that placed strict restrictions on carrying a concealed firearm in public for self-defense purposes. This comes at the same time the U.S. Senate is working to pass a bipartisan gun safety bill, and other states, including North Carolina, are in the process of passing gun safety bills. The 6-3 decision found that requiring applicants applying for a concealed carry license to demonstrate a special reason for self-defense is a violation of the Second Amendment.

U.S. Supreme Court rules North Carolina Republicans can defend voter ID law in court

The U.S. Supreme Court released a key decision today in the ongoing fight over North Carolina voting laws, ruling 8-1 that leaders of the state’s Republican legislature can defend a photo identification law in court. The court’s ruling did not discuss the merits of having photo ID laws. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the majority opinion, based this decision on the right of partisan state governments to represent themselves in court.

City of Graham, county law enforcement to pay $336,900 to settle 2020 protest

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina against the Graham police department and Alamance County Sheriff Department, which alleged the use of excessive force by the police departments against protestors during a voting rights march. The city of Graham, Graham police department and county sheriff will pay $336,900 to the group of plaintiffs represented by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Members of class of 2022 reflect on Peace Corps Prep program

The Peace Corps Prep program is centered around four core competencies: sector-specific skills, foreign language proficiency, intercultural competence and professional savvy and leadership. Elon has ranked seventh among 150 partner universities for the number of certificates awarded in 2021. This year, ten Elon students received a certificate.

Alamance County to commemorate Juneteenth

Juneteenth National Independence Day, also known as Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, when the end of slavery was announced in Galveston, Texas, two years after the ratification of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was designated a federal holiday last year by President Joe Biden.

Town of Elon Police releases statement regarding Halloween festivities at Oak Hill Apartments

Ahead of Homecoming and Halloween festivities, town of Elon Police released a statement to the residents of Oak Hill Apartments stating they have been made aware of a planned, large-scale party rumored to take place within the apartment complex Nov. 2. The memorandum, released Oct. 28, also stated that if such a gathering occurs, those who are responsible may be subject to legal action including criminal charges and fines. Assistant Elon Police Chief Kedrick King said the decision to release the memorandum was based on previous incidents that have taken place at Oak Hill.

Alamance, Guilford juvenile detention rates reach highest in more than a decade

Steven Isaiah Bradshaw was 11 years old the first time he went to Guilford Detention Center. He was detained again at 13, 16 and 18 years old for various robbery and gun charges. Matthew Cappello, Alamance County’s lead juvenile court counselor, said recidivism — or the likelihood of criminal offenders reoffending — is one of the state’s biggest concerns within the juvenile and criminal justice systems. In 2023, recidivism reached 80% for prisoners with juvenile records in the United States. To combat this, Cappello said North Carolina has made it a priority to invest in diversion and restoration resources rather than punishment and deterrence techniques such as detainment.
