Stolen vehicles, additional break-ins reported to Elon police

Nine vehicle break-ins and two stolen vehicles have been reported to the town of Elon police in the last couple of weeks, according to a June 15 email from Jon Dooley, vice president for student life. Many, but not all, of the vehicles belong to Elon University students.

Elon Town Council passes fiscal year 2023 budget, recognizes Juneteenth, Pride Month

Five vehicle break-ins reported to Elon police

Elon police are investigating a series of vehicle break-ins after four Elon University students and one Graham resident reported on June 13 their vehicles had been broken into, according to an incident report obtained from the Town Police Department.

Black bear spotted in Burlington, near Elon University

According to an E-alert sent out June 14 at 10:45 a.m., a black bear was spotted in the area of Saddle Club Road and Pineway Drive in Burlington, about three minutes from Elon University.

Alamance County under heat advisory

Alamance County will remain under a heat advisory through 8 p.m. June 13, according to the National Weather Service, after high temperatures state and nationwide. The county will be under an excessive heat warning from noon to 8 p.m. June 14, with temperatures expected to reach highs between 110 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

Construction work of Elon University’s Park Place becomes subject of lawsuit

One of Elon University’s student apartment complexes, Park Place at Elon, is at the center of a dispute in which Greensboro-based Samet Corporation is suing a subcontractor and architecture company hired to work on the mixed-use development for allegedly failing to provide services in a way that would have prevented future structural damage to the property.

Protest against gun violence held in Raleigh, nationwide

It has been 1,578 days since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that sparked the youth-led March for Our Lives movement. 1,540 days after the first demonstration, thousands of people gathered once again Saturday in Raleigh, Washington D.C. and across the country to protest a recent string of national gun violence.

How to celebrate Pride Month in and around Alamance County

Celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, Pride Month commemorates LGBTQIA+ communities, their ongoing pursuit for equal justice under the law and their accomplishments. Garay said when they look at queer history, they start with Stonewall but also reflect on the events that came after, such as the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

NC Senate passes bill to ban instruction on sexual orientation, gender identity in grades K-3

Teachers could be banned from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity to students in kindergarten through third grades after a bill was passed by the North Carolina State Senate on June 1. House Bill 755, also known as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” passed with a vote of 28 for and 18 against. Now, the bill will go to the State House of Representatives.

Elon University will continue to require vaccine, booster

Elon University will continue to require all students to receive a COVID-19 vaccination and booster shot for the fall 2022 semester, according to an email from Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson. Students must update their vaccine information on the PhoenixHealth portal by July 1.
